Types of Lamp/Lighting

  • Incandescent – light with a filament wire heated to a high temperature by an electric current passing through it. Power consumption is really high as it produces large amount of heat. These lighting are very old in technology and hence cost is cheaper than other lighting system.
  • Halogen – It is same as Incandescent lamp with halogen gas inside it. Halogen is a chemical element typically produced from mineral and salt. The filament used in halogen lamp is called tungsten which in combination with the halogen gas increases the life of the lamp and lamp can be operated in higher temperature. Thus it produces higher light but it also consumes a lot of power and generates a lot of heat around it. Hence not suitable for a typical home or office interior.
  • Fluorescent Lamp – It contains mercury vapor and gas in a tube form which is coated with phosphorus. When current passes through one end of the tube to another end, the current in the gas makes the mercury vapor produce a ultraviolet light and hence the phosphorus coating glows.So when you take the phosphorus coating out, it becomes an UV light which make all the white objects in the room reflect light. This consumes much lesser power than compared to an incandescent light. Also known as tube light, this is mostly used everywhere but now LED lamps are slowly taking over.
  • Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) – It is the same as fluorescent lamp, but the tubes are curved and electronic arrangement are done in a very compact manner so that it fits into the holder of an Incandescent lamp. Highly energy saving but the initial cost could be higher. But unlike a tube fluorescent bulb, you do not have to make arrangement for a choke or a starter.
  • Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lamp – LED is a two-lead semiconductor light source.Electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. The color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy-band gap of the semiconductor.It is the least power consuming light and has the highest life among all category of lights. Although the initial purchase cost is a bit high, the demand is rapidly growing because of low maintenance and lesser power cost.   
  • High Intensity Discharge – Same as a halogen lamp but tungsten is kept inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube. It forms a plasma, which increases the intensity of light produced by the arc as compared to a standard halogen light. Hence you get same amount of light and lesser power consumption.
